Message from the Chair

Susan Scott photo Many of us thrive on the change inherent in educational telecommunications, but recently higher education has faced an unprecedented combination of social and economic pressures. I call it the new math of higher education, and the message goes something like this: “We’ll give you the same or less money to serve twice as many students, most of whom are far less well prepared, but you’re still accountable for getting more of them through the pipeline in less time and better prepared for new-economy jobs. And if you can’t figure out soon how to do it, we’ll tell you how or outsource to those who can.”

Rapid technology developments present unparalleled opportunities to help address these challenges creatively. Join colleagues from around the country and across the world November 1-4, 2006, for the 18th WCET Annual Conference. WCET conferences have a well-deserved reputation for provocative topics, practical take-aways, and collegial sharing. You really don’t want to miss “Blazing the E-Learning Trail . . . Forging New Ways to Learn!”

This year’s conference theme is as apt as it is timely. WCET members have been trailblazers in testing, adopting, and assessing applications of new technologies to improve access and enhance teaching and learning. As an organization, WCET has a track record of members learning from one another by sharing best practices and worst mistakes, working jointly on projects that address common needs, and convening to monitor the rolling horizon.

The 2006 Planning Committee has outdone itself—again!—with a balance of stimulating plenary sessions, over 40 focused breakout sessions, in-depth preconference workshops, and plenty of time for the personal networking that is a hallmark of WCET. Be sure to visit the member displays during the opening reception, where you can talk in a relaxed setting about their new services and latest projects. And plan to attend the breakfasts and luncheons for more time to reconnect with friends and meet new colleagues.

Portland will tempt you outside as well, with its mountain vistas, gardens, museums and galleries, and terrific restaurants within walking or light-rail range. If you can, come early or stay over to explore nearby scenic spots around this lovely, lively city.

Whether your day job is in teaching, faculty support, student services, advanced technologies, administration, or policy at whatever kind of institution, the WCET conference is a must-attend event each year. I hope to see you November 1-4 in Portland for a great learning opportunity!
